In October 2013, the City of Casselberry exceeded the established maximum contaminant limit for the disinfection byproducts total trihalomethanes (TTHM) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). The failure does not represent an emergency. If it was an emergency, you would have been notified immediately.
EPA standards established for THMs and HAAs are based on long term exposure to these chemicals. Long term exposure is assumed that a person would drink two liters a day every day for seventy years. Because long-term exposure to these chemical may result in adverse health effects, the City is required to notify customers when there is an exceedance of the standard. Those with severely compromised immune systems, infants and some elderly may wish to consult
with a health care provider if you have any concerns.
The Public Works Department has identified a number of operational procedures that may help reduce DBP formation. An activated carbon filtering system for the South Water Treatment Plant has been designed and is expected to be in operation by late 2014.
